Veterinarski zavod Subotica (joint-stock company) was founded in 1921. Though it operated under a variety of names in 1952 it obtained its present name. In 1999 it became a joint stock company, and in 2005 it merged with Victoria Group business system. The company currently employs 329 people.The main activity of the company is production within four manufacturing programmes: animal food, pharmaceutical products, biological products, and DDD products. Animal food production includes premixes and mixtures for all sorts of farm animals, extruded food for carp and trout, as well as cat and dog extruded food. Category of pharmaceutical food includes powdered and fluid pharmaceutical forms. Most important biological products are viral vaccines, bacterial vaccines, and serums. Finally, DDD programme includes a variety of disinfection, disinsection and deratization means.   Company is one of the leading market players in most of its manufacturing programmes which are performed not only on the territory of Serbia but also in the markets of Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Bulgaria, and Romania. The largest market share in Serbia is represented in the production and sales of chemo-pharmaceutical products, fish feed, and cattle food. The volume and structure of sales in specific groups of products for the period 2007-2009 can be seen in Figure 11. Significant investments started in 2005 after company had entered the business system of Victoria group. In 2006, the line for pet food production was finished and put into operation. In 2007 Symbiofarm Company was purchased which doubled the production of pharmaceutical products within the company. At the beginning of 2008 a completely new boiler-room and substation were completed, and roads, weighing scales and storage premises were modernized.Total gasification of the Institute was also completed. In 2008 and 2009 the reconstruction of plant for manufacturing solid pharmaceutical forms in Srpska Crnja was completed and fully equipped. At the same time the new plant for manufact-uring fluid forms of sterile and non-sterile veterinary medicines was completed and put into operation with the total value of € 3 million. In 2009 the new plant for production of extruded food for fresh-water fish was put into operation with total value of € 4 million. In the period to follow company will extend the range to sea fish feed production. The company uses the most up-to-date technology in its production processes, due to which farmers will have a complete service – from prevention to nutrition to animal treatment. Since October 2009 the Company has had ISO 22000 Certificate guaranteeing food quality and safety. This cluster of standards also includes HACCP quality standards. We are in the process of introducing the highest quality standards in pharmaceutical industry (GNP Standard), as well as modernizing the process of production in accordance with the new national and European regulation in the field of food safety. With the help of this, Veterinarski zavod Subotica became the only company in the country that can export to EU markets, Near East or Middle East markets
